National Identity Fraud Protection Week
Monday October 8th marked the beginning of the UK's 3rd National Identity Fraud Protection week; a nationwide awareness campaign set up in 2005 to help protects citizens against one of the UK's fastest growing crimes.
It is estimated that at least a quarter of the UK population has been affected in some way by identity fraud. The campaign therefore aims to increase awareness of how identity fraud occurs by offering advice and information on how to protect yourself and your business from becoming a potential victim.
Peter Hurst, Chief Executive of CIFAS the UK's Fraud Prevention Service said, "No one should be complacent about identity fraud. The effect on victims can be devastating. Where a victim's identity has been seriously compromised, it can take years to untangle the threads of deception. Even where it is possible to rectify matters quickly, the psychological damage caused by such frauds can cast a long shadow."
Criminals will use a variety of techniques in order to acquire any vital information pertaining to another person's identity. It is important to be made aware of such tactics such as general pick pocketing, burglary, sieving through rubbish in dustbins for any paperwork containing an address or bank account number, phishing, online identity theft and interception or diversion of mail in the post.
The National Identity Fraud Protection Week is supported by several leading UK organisations from both the public and private sectors: CIFAS, Royal mail, Experian, Equifax, DVLA, Identity and Passport Service, BBA, HM Revenue & Customs, APACS, SOCA, the FSA, City of London Police and regional police forces across the UK.
